Marlins, Reyes agree to deal

9:40 p.m. EST update: ESPN?s Buster Olney says the Marlins and Reyes have a deal, and FOXSports.com?s Ken Rosenthal reports it?s for $106 million over six years and that there is?not a no-trade clause included.

Analysis pieces:

Mets? future bleak without Reyes

9:00 p.m. EST update: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com?s reports that the Marlins and Reyes are close to terms on a six-year deal believed to be worth $110 million.

8:00 p.m. EST update: The Mets are out of the bidding for Reyes, according to Newsday?s David Lennon and others. The Marlins are in the driver?s seat with a bid that multiple sources have stated tops $100 million.

///

Now that?s more like it.

According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the Marlins have upped their six-year offer to Jose Reyes from $90 million to $111 million.

The deal would pay Reyes a cool $17.67 million annually for six years and includes a $22 million option?with a $5 million buyout for 2018.

The Marlins?are the only team known to have offered Reyes a contract, though it?s believed the Mets would be willing to go to around $16 million per year to keep him. $111 million may well get a deal done, assuming that the offer is for real and doesn?t include a bundle of deferred money.

Detroit and Milwaukee are a couple of the other teams known to have checked in on Reyes.

Herman Cain Suspends Presidential Campaign

In the wake of both sexual harassment and infidelity allegations, Republication Presidential nominee Herman Cain suspended his campaign this afternoon, effectively ending his bid for the White House in 2012.

"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," Cain said at an Atlanta rally, vowing that "I am not going to be silenced and I am not going away."

Cain cited the "continued distraction" of chatter over Ginger White's claim that she carried on a 13-year affair - during which Cain supposedly showered her with gifts and financial help - with the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza as the basis for his decision.

"These false and untrue allegations continue to be spinned in the media, and in the court of public opinion so as to create a cloud of doubt over me and this campaign and my family," Cain said. "That spin hurts. It hurts my wife. It hurts my family. It hurts me. And it hurts the American people, because you are being denied solutions to our problems."

Even before White rose to national prominence, Cain was under pressure after several other women accused him of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct in the 1990s when he was the head of the National Restaurant Association.

"One of declarations I want to make to you today is that I am at peace with my God. I am at peace with my wife, and she is at peace with me. And I am at peace with my family and at peace with myself," Cain said.

Metals end week higher on hopes of growth (AP)

Metals prices ended the week sharply higher Friday on confidence that the U.S. economy will continue growing.

Metals prices started climbing Monday after early reports showed that retail sales were higher than many traders expected during Thanksgiving weekend. Prices continued to rise through the week as reports indicated the U.S. economy might grow more quickly than many investors thought.

On Friday, the government said the unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent, the lowest level since March 2009. The country added 120,000 jobs in November, according to the Labor Department. The economy has generated 100,000 or more jobs five months in a row ? the first time that has happened since April 2006, well before the deep recession.

If U.S. economic growth continues through 2012, it could increase demand for materials like palladium and copper. The metals are used as raw materials to make cars, electronics devices and construction materials.

Palladium for March delivery gained $15.65 Friday, or nearly 2.5 percent, to close at $645.85 an ounce. Palladium is up nearly 13 percent for the week. Copper for March delivery rose 5.05 cents to close at $3.5845 per pound. Copper ended the week 10 percent higher.

Platinum for January delivery lost $8.70 to settle at $1,548.50 an ounce. Platinum is up 1 percent for the week.

Precious metals also ended the week higher.

Gold for February delivery rose $11.50 to settle at $1,751.30 per ounce. Gold is up nearly 4 percent for the week. March silver fell 7.3 cents to close at $32.686 an ounce, putting silver nearly 6 percent higher since Monday.

In other trading, crop prices were mixed. Corn for March delivery fell 6.25 cents to settle at $5.9525 per bushel. January soybeans gained 7.75 cents to close at $11.3575 a bushel. March wheat rose 11.25 cents to finish at $6.255 per bushel.

In energy trading, benchmark crude oil gained 76 cents to end at $100.96 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Heating oil rose 2.05 cents to finish at $2.99 per gallon. Gasoline futures gained 5.83 cents to close at $2.6162 per gallon and natural gas lost 6.4 cents to close at $3.584 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Charge an iPhone with an iPad?

This may seem like a weird question, but I was idly wondering is there a way--cable of some sort--that would charge an iPhone from an iPad. I mean, the iPad has a bigger battery, so it's theoretically possible to use some of that juice for the iPhone.

Maybe this question is only a thought experiment. I googled and found nothing.

Latest theory in NY mystery deaths: 1 killer of 10 (AP)

YAPHANK, N.Y. ? A New York police official now says one person may be responsible for leaving 10 bodies along a remote barrier beach since 1996.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer says in interviews this week that police no longer think multiple killers are responsible. Dormer has previously said that as many as three people could have left bodies along a desolate Long Island roadway.

In interviews with WABC-TV and Newsday, Dormer did not elaborate on the reason for investigators' revised theory. But he does say it is notable that all victims may be linked to the sex trade.

The investigation began as a hunt for a still-missing New Jersey prostitute. She disappeared in the area in May 2010.

Strange new 'species' of ultra-red galaxy discovered

Thursday, December 1, 2011

In the distant reaches of the universe, almost 13 billion light-years from Earth, a strange species of galaxy lay hidden. Cloaked in dust and dimmed by the intervening distance, even the Hubble Space Telescope couldn't spy it. It took the revealing power of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to uncover not one, but four remarkably red galaxies. And while astronomers can describe the members of this new "species," they can't explain what makes them so ruddy.

"We've had to go to extremes to get the models to match our observations," said Jiasheng Huang of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). Huang is lead author on the paper announcing the find, which was published online by the Astrophysical Journal.

Spitzer succeeded where Hubble failed because Spitzer is sensitive to infrared light - light so red that it lies beyond the visible part of the spectrum. The newfound galaxies are more than 60 times brighter in the infrared than they are at the reddest colors Hubble can detect.

Galaxies can be very red for several reasons. They might be very dusty. They might contain many old, red stars. Or they might be very distant, in which case the expansion of the universe stretches their light to longer wavelengths and hence redder colors (a process known as redshifting). All three reasons seem to apply to the newfound galaxies.

All four galaxies are grouped near each other and appear to be physically associated, rather than being a chance line-up. Due to their great distance, we see them as they were only a billion years after the Big Bang - an era when the first galaxies formed.

"Hubble has shown us some of the first protogalaxies that formed, but nothing that looks like this. In a sense, these galaxies might be a 'missing link' in galactic evolution" said co-author Giovanni Fazio of the CfA.

Next, researchers hope to measure an accurate redshift for the galaxies, which will require more powerful instruments like the Large Millimeter Telescope or Atacama Large Millimeter Array. They also plan to search for more examples of this new "species" of extremely red galaxies.

"There's evidence for others in other regions of the sky. We'll analyze more Spitzer and Hubble observations to track them down," said Fazio.
