A history of high-performance Olympic uniforms

In the beginning, there was cotton

When Thomas Burke won the first Olympic 100-meter dash in 1896, he was wearing a cotton t-shirt and shorts, not that different from what you'd see in a modern-day gym class. But when sprinters step the mark this week, they'll be outfitted in computer-modeled sneakers and wind-tunnel-tested polyurethane, some of the most advanced fabrics money can buy.

But let's start at the beginning.

As the 19th century drew to a close, there was good reason to use cotton. As natural fabrics go, it's hard to do better. The individual fibers of cotton have a naturally winding helix shape, which gives the resulting fabric an unusual amount of stretch. That means you can keep uniforms trim enough to be aerodynamic without restricting a hurdler's range of motion. Cotton's also very breathable, given a light enough weave. On the downside, it holds a lot of sweat, so the runners were often soaked by the end of the race.

Nylon arrives

Nylon was first developed by DuPont in 1935, but the synthetic fabric didn't make it to the Olympics until 1948, via the first nylon bathing suits. Almost immediately, it was hard to imagine swimming without nylon. The material itself is made up of long carbon chains that don't absorb nearly as much water as a vegetable-based compound like cotton. That means there's less weight to hold a swimmer back, and a more frictionless way to move through the pool.

The cleat

Track shoes got lighter and lighter, helped in part by a new reliance on nylon uppers (that's the "upper" half of the shoe; everything that isn't the laces or the sole), but a bigger change came in 1968 with the shift from cinder tracks to the spongy synthetic surface you see on most modern tracks. Spikes got shorter and the soft tracks allowed shoemakers to use thinner soles that made shoes even lighter.

Going barefoot

That's assuming you need shoes at all. Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila won the Olympic marathon barefoot in 1960, and barefoot partisans have been using him as a talking point ever since. Barefoot advocates are a vocal group in the running world, claiming that less cushioning encourages bad form. It's been shown that the cushioning of a running shoe can cause a runner to strike the ground harder and shift their weight more towards the heel, both of which can be problematic in a single race and in the long term. Otherwise, the science is mostly a wash. Barefoot runners still pop up in the Olympics from time to time ? most recently, Kenya's Tegla Loroupe, who ran barefoot in the marathon and 10k in 2000 ? but it's hard to say if it provides an advantage.

The runner's singlet

By the 1970s, synthetics had worked their way into running uniforms and the split between distance runners and sprinters became more pronounced. Marathoners opted for sweat-wicking singlets, designed to be as light as possible without absorbing the moisture (and weight) of sweat. Speed runners were more concerned with aerodynamics, which meant a shift to form-fitting speed suits that kept the runner's profile as slim as possible. By keeping the fabric taut, they could make sure the path of air around the body wouldn't be obstructed by wrinkles or loose flaps of fabric. Sprinters wouldn't get into more structurally advanced fabrics until recent games, but they were already thinking aerodynamically.

Nike Swift

Computer modeling opened up a whole new era in materials science, and for Olympic runners, that meant the advent of wearable fabrics so smooth they create less air friction than human skin. The Nike Swift uniforms in 2008 are a prime example, with friction-reducing sheaths on the parts of the body that move the most, like the calves and forearms. The sheaths were made from 3M's Scotchlite material, a fabric composed of thousands of powder-like beads, and more often seen in reflective strips like this. This was the first time the material had been used for aerodynamics, but tests revealed it reduced air friction by up to 55 percent. Also, it made sprinters look like extras in "Tron."

The Speedo LZR

The Speedo LZR is the most effective hi-tech uniform the Olympics has seen ? so effective that it led swimmers to break 130 world records in the 17 months after its Bejing debut, and was subsequently banned from the sport. There had been hydrodynamic suits before, but the LZR also compressed its wearer's upper body (creating an even more hydrodynamic shape) and added buoyancy. In areas like the upper legs in which swimmers don't need a wide range of motion, the LZR sacrificed flexibility for sheer speed by replacing the fabric with stiffer planks of polyurethane that lowered drag by 24 percent.

The Nike Flyknit

Newly emerged from a four-year development process, the U.S. team's new shoe for 2012 is Nike's Flyknit, which is woven together for a flexible, socklike feel. The shoe relies on a lightweight polyester yarn for its upper, but a lot of the technology here is in the construction rather than the materials. All the internal construction of the shoe, from the tongue to the structured fit, was accomplished using a network of knit cables of varying elasticity. The shoe is knit together rather than stitched and glued, which makes it a full 20 percent lighter than the shoes marathoners wore at the last Games ? a size 9 is just 5.6 ounces. You'll see it on the feet of U.S. marathoners in this year's games, and Adidas is already supplying its athletes with a similar shoe dubbed Primeknit.

The Nike TurboSpeed

For 2012, Nike unveiled the TurboSpeed, the most advanced speed suit they've ever produced (at least until the next one). Instead of trying to make the fabric as smooth as possible, Nike added golf-ball-esque dimples to the surface of the polyester, after extensive wind-tunnel research revealed them to be more aerodynamic. They say they'll shave .023 seconds off a runner's time in the 100m dash. If true, it could easily be the difference between bronze and gold.

KeePass

Most password managers integrate with your browser and aim to fully automate the process of capturing and replaying credentials for secure websites. KeePass (free), an open source tool, takes a rather different approach. While it doesn't automate capture of secure credentials, it can log in to websites using any browser and can also handle application passwords. It's also absolutely loaded with configuration options; a tinkerer's dream!

KeePass's wealth of options is noticeable right from the start. When you first create your database, you can choose to define a strong master password for encryption, use a file as the encryption key, or both. If the key file resides on a USB drive, you've just enabled two-factor authentication. In addition, if you never plan to use KeePass on a different PC you can lock the database to the currently active Windows account.

For extra security you can turn on the product's secure desktop option. With this setting active, when KeePass presents its master key entry dialog it suppresses other processes, to protect against keyloggers and other tracking tools.

KeePass can import from over 30 other password managers, including Kaspersky Password Manager 4 and RoboForm Desktop 7. The free LastPass 2.0 wasn't on the list, but I had no trouble exporting to CSV and importing that file to KeePass. Doing so did require that I match up the fields from my CSV file with field names in KeePass, but a preview window made it easy to see when I got the matchup right. Do note that any time you transfer passwords via a plain-text CSV file you should securely delete that file afterward.

By default your database is strictly local. You can move it to a USB drive for added security. Conversely, you can sync it to a URL online in order to use it across multiple PCs. Of course you must supply the online storage; it's a very do-it-yourself system.

Configurable Password Generation
Most password managers include a password generator. Most, like LastPass and RoboForm, let you choose which characters will be included. With next to no settings for password generation, Dashlane is an exception. KeePass's password generator deserves special attention for its flexibility.

With KeePass you can choose to include uppercase letters, lowercase letters or numbers. Where most password generators lump all the rest into "special characters," KeePass handles dash, underscore, and brackets separately from the rest. It can also optionally include the space character and "High ANSI" characters like ? and ?, if you find any applications that support them.

KeePass can generate hexadecimal keys of varying lengths, like those used for WEP and WPA authentication. It's even possible to define a pattern of character types that KeePass will match precisely. A preview tab displays a whole page of passwords matching the current pattern.

Las Vegas Sands target of U.S. money-laundering probe, WSJ says

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Las Vegas Sands Corp, controlled by billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, is the target of a federal investigation into possible violations of U.S. money-laundering laws, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

The Los Angeles U.S. attorney's office is looking into the casino company's handling of the receipt of millions of dollars from a Mexican businessman, later indicted in the United States for drug trafficking, and a former California businessman, later convicted of taking illegal kickbacks, the Journal said, citing lawyers and others involved in the matter.

The transactions date from the mid-2000s.

The Journal said there are no indications that actions by Adelson, who is the company's chief executive officer and largest shareholder, are being investigated.

The Los Angeles U.S. attorney could not be reached for comment by Reuters on Saturday. A Sands spokesman was not immediately available to comment to Reuters, but spokesman Ron Reese told the Journal, "The company believes it has acted properly and has not committed any wrongdoing."

Reese said the company was cooperating with federal investigators.

The timing of the investigation could open the Justice Department to criticism that it is politically motivated, the Journal said. Adelson is a major donor to the super PAC supporting presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney against President Barack Obama and plans to spend $100 million on Republican candidates in November's elections.

Adelson, who owns casinos in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore, began this campaign season as a major donor to Newt Gingrich before Gingrich dropped out of the Republican presidential race. He has since switched his support to Romney and last month was in Jerusalem with the candidate when Romney met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who Adelson also strongly supports.

The Journal said the Las Vegas money-laundering investigation focused on two "whales" - as big-money gamblers are known - and whether Sands officials ignored warning signs and did not alert federal authorities about millions of dollars the gamblers had deposited.

The Journal identified one of the "whales" as Zhenli Ye Gon, a Chinese-born Mexican national who was indicted in 2007 in the United States on charges of dealing in materials used to make methamphetamine.

The drug case was dismissed in 2009 but Ye Gon is still in U.S. custody awaiting extradition to Mexico, where authorities want to try him on drug trafficking and money laundering charges, the Journal said, citing court records.

The Journal said Ausaf Umar Siddiqui, a former executive with the Fry's Electronics retail chain, also was under scrutiny. Court filings in another case showed Siddiqui sent more than $100 million to the Sands. Siddiqui was charged with taking kickbacks from Fry's vendors, pleaded guilty and is now in prison.

U.S. authorities also are investigating the Sands to see if there were breaches of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), which prohibits bribes to foreign officials by U.S. companies, in its Macau operation.

Sabathia's 3-hitter ends M's 7-game streak

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia has a history of mastering the Mariners, no matter who is behind the plate.

Sabathia pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10, dominating the Mariners as usual while leading the New York Yankees to a 6-3 victory Friday night that stopped Seattle's seven-game winning streak.

"CC is a winner. Very seldom do I have to worry about CC," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Eric Chavez hit a two-run homer and Curtis Granderson had a two-run single off Kevin Millwood, sending the AL East leaders to their second consecutive win following a 3-9 slide.

Sabathia (11-3) rebounded from a rocky start against Boston with another overpowering performance against his favorite foe. Pitching in the sort of thick humidity that he's always enjoyed, the big lefty improved to 8-0 with a 1.20 ERA in his past eight starts against the Mariners.

"I know today they came out really aggressive. They do have a lot of lefties in their lineup, and that tends to work in my advantage," Sabathia said.

Russell Martin was behind the plate for New York after backup Chris Stewart caught Sabathia's previous 16 starts.

"I've been paying attention to what he's been doing. Even though I don't play, I watch how he's attacking hitters," Martin said. "I wanted to make sure he had a good start today. I'm glad we put that behind us."

Girardi had said he planned to reunite Martin and Sabathia when he thought the time was right.

"It's just nice to get behind there with the ace," Martin said. "It felt pretty natural. I was maybe a little nervous before the game."

Ichiro Suzuki started a rally against his former team, and the Yankees helped Sabathia improve to 4-0 in his last seven outings.

Going into the ninth, he had given up only Casper Wells' solo homer in the fourth and Miguel Olivo's eighth-inning double. But he walked Brendan Ryan to start the inning before Dustin Ackley drove his eighth homer deep into the seats in right.

Girardi came out for a quick chat with Sabathia, who retired the next three batters as the crowd of 45,872 chanted "CC! CC!" Sabathia threw 72 of 103 pitches for strikes in his 35th career complete game and second this season.

"I told him, `Let's go. Let's get through this inning,"' Girardi said. "I wanted to make sure how he felt."

Dating to May 2006, Sabathia has yielded no more than one earned run in nine of 11 starts against Seattle. The last time he faced the Mariners, he whiffed a career-high 14 on July 26 last season.

The six-time All-Star and 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner is 12-4 in 20 career starts against the Mariners, who are managed by his former skipper in Cleveland, Eric Wedge.

"There weren't opportunities to be had, really," Wedge said. "CC was outstanding - as good as I've seen him. He had everything working. I think he beats anybody tonight with what he was throwing out there."

Last in the AL West, the Mariners had won 13 of 17 and were trying for their first eight-game winning streak in five years. They began a nine-game trip that also takes them to Baltimore and Los Angeles.

Still speedy at age 38, Suzuki opened the third by beating out a dribbler that was picked up by an off-balance Millwood (4-9) between the mound and third base. Martin doubled on an 0-2 pitch and both runners scored when Granderson singled to center on Millwood's next delivery.

"You could see pretty early we weren't going to be able to give up many runs, if any, to have a chance," Millwood said. "Didn't pitch good enough."

The 37-year-old right-hander held the Yankees in check, however, and was one out from getting through the sixth inning unscathed when Chavez hit a high fly ball to right. It fell just beyond a leaping Eric Thames and hit the cement ledge right behind the fence, maybe 320 feet from home plate.

Thames said the ball was deflected by a fan's glove as he tried to reach over the wall and snare it.

"I thought he was going to catch it," Chavez said.

After returning to the dugout, Chavez and Mark Teixeira shared a laugh.

"He was talking today: `I feel like I need a cheap one,"' Teixeira said with a smile. "He got it."

Chavez, who has been using teammate Andruw Jones' bat, became the ninth Yankee with at least 10 homers this season - one shy of the club record set in 1998.

Robinson Cano and Raul Ibanez both added an RBI single in the seventh against the Seattle bullpen. Carter Capps faced three hitters in his major league debut, retiring only Derek Jeter on a sacrifice bunt.

NOTES: Teixeira went 1-for-4 in his return to the lineup after missing two games with a sore left wrist. ... Jayson Nix replaced Chavez at 3B in the ninth after his ankle began to bother him.
