Tablet Home Screens, Wireless Mice, and Blurry Photos

Tablet Home Screens, Wireless Mice, and Blurry PhotosReaders offer their best tips for arranging your tablet's home screen, charging the batteries in your wireless mouse, and taking better action photos at night.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

Put Icons in the Corner of Your Home Screen for One-Handed Access

MsCassLopez shares a one-handed tip for her new tablet:

Instead of following the masses and arranging your icons in a nice rectangular grid on your tablet think about how you use the darned thing: one handed; and you only have the thumb of your right (or left) hand to click with. Arrange your icons like in the image above. Your stuff is all in reach of your thumb. Lesser used stuff is in reach of your left thumb. Group related apps together in a folder to save switching screens all the time.

Use Old Gadgets as Battery Chargers

The_Ov3rminD finds a use for a mostly-broken mouse:

Use an old wireless mouse as an inexpensive battery charger. I have a Logitech G700 and as anyone that owns one knows, they devour batteries at an alarming rate. So my solution is to use my old G700 that has broken buttons as a battery charger. That way, I always have a fresh battery waiting for my G700! I never have to plug in my mouse to charge it, just swap the batteries from my older, broken G700 and continue on with what I was doing.

Obviously, this only works if you have the same mouse, or if your old device takes the same kind of battery as your new one. Title image remixed from Michael Joseph.

Take Video Instead of Photos in Low Light

Nell324 takes better pictures at night:

To take action photos in low light, like at night, just set your camera or phone to take a video or movie clip. It will let enough light in and by using free frame-capture software such as VLC, you can get perfect, motion-free, well-lit photos.

Your mileage may vary a lot on this?you may find that a lot of your video's frames are blurry, but it might work if you can't figure out another method (particularly on a low-end camera like your phone). Title image remixed from Stig Nygaard.

Check SSD Compatibility Before Installing Windows 8

Kfang1233 finds that his SSD doesn't work with Windows 8:

If you have an SSD and you plan to update to Windows 8, do some research before you actually do, as many SSD's don't support Windows 8 yet and require a new firmware. My Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD ran Windows 7 perfectly fine, but in Windows 8, after 5 minutes of booting, it gives me a "DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION" blue screen. Newer SSDs are probably fine.

Just look up your model name then the word "Firmware" on Google. If you don't see anything, I'd suggest waiting until there's a firmware update. My Kingston HyperX doesn't have a firmware update, so luckily I had a spare HDD to use my computer on, but remember to look for a firmware update or do some research before installing Windows 8 on your SSD!

I've yet to see any problems like this (my SSD was pretty old and it worked fine), but a compatibility search certainly couldn't hurt.

Council of Foreign Relations website hacked

17 hrs.

How would you like it if one of your favorite websites were hacked and rigged to infect you with malware??

That's what seems to have happened to the website of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR), a New York-based bipartisan think tank with a long list of illustrious members.?

The CFR's website was infected around Dec. 21 with a Trojan that exploited a previously unknown, or zero-day, flaw in older versions of Internet Explorer, setting up visitors using IE for a?drive-by download infection.?

"The vulnerability is a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in the way that Internet Explorer accesses an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated," Microsoft said in a?security advisory?posted Saturday. "The vulnerability may corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user within Internet Explorer."?

The malware affects Internet Explorer versions 6 through 8. Internet Explorer 9 and 10 are not affected, meaning users of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 can upgrade to those browsers to avoid infection.?

Microsoft is working on a fix, but in the meantime?recommends?that Windows users who cannot upgrade to newer versions of Internet Explorer set their Internet and intranet security-zone settings to "High," to set up alerts before running Active Scripting and to install the free?Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. [Update: Microsoft has?posted a "fix-it,"?a script that temporarily fixes the problem while the company continues to work on a full patch.]?

Chinese connection??
The CFR website compromise was first reported by the?Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news blog that quoted anonymous sources as saying the attack seemed to originate in China.?

FireEye, a Milpitas, Calif.-based information-security company, confirmed the CFR website was hosting malicious code in the form of a rigged Adobe Flash file.?

In its blog posting,?FireEye noted?that the code associated with the malware also restricted its victims to only systems using English, Russian, Chinese, Korean or Japanese, and that some internal code used simplified Chinese characters, as used on the Chinese mainland.?

Chinese state-sponsored hackers have been suspected in dozens of major information-stealing network attacks on Western governments, corporations and organizations over the past half decade.?

Such attacks are often politely termed "advanced persistent threats," and while most of the evidence points to China, few of the suspicions have been proven.?

American bigwig jackpot
Because the CFR is so prestigious and influential, experts characterized its website's hijacking as a?"watering-hole" attack.?

Watering-hole attacks are similar to?spear-phishing attacks?in that they target computers belonging to a specific person or a small group of people, but using Web browsers instead of email clients as the infection mechanism.?

In the case of the CFR, dozens of its prominent members would be ripe targets for state-sponsored information thieves. Former Treasury Secretary and Goldman Sachs head Robert Rubin co-chairs the board of directors, while former U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell sit on the board, as do journalists Tom Brokaw and Fareed Zakaria.?

Former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger, George Shultz and James Baker are reportedly lifetime members, as are current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as well as Hillary Clinton's possible replacement Sen. John Kerry.?

Other lifetime members are said to include Fox News Channel head Roger Ailes, his boss Rupert Murdoch, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Vice President Joe Biden, former vice presidents Dick Cheney and Walter Mondale and former presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? In the world of paparazzi, one image of the rich or famous can be like winning the lottery. But the hunt for that shot can be dangerous ? even deadly.

A photographer was struck by a car and killed on Tuesday as he darted across a street after snapping pictures of Justin Bieber's white Ferrari ? and the teen heartthrob wasn't even in the car.

The incident brought the dangers of paparazzi's often aggressive work into harsh focus, and prompted some celebrities to renew their calls for tougher laws to rein in their pursuers.

However, at least one previous attempt has been stymied by First Amendment protections.

Authorities have withheld the name of the 29-year-old photographer killed on Tuesday pending notification of relatives.

In a statement, Bieber said his prayers were with the photographer's family.

"Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves," Bieber said in the statement released by Island Def Jam Music Group.

Much of Hollywood was abuzz about the death.

Miley Cyrus sent several tweets, saying paparazzi act like "fools" and the unfortunate accident was "bound to happen."

"Hope this paparazzi/JB accident brings on some changes in '13," Cyrus said on her Twitter page. "Paparazzi are dangerous! Wasn't Princess Di enough of a wake-up call?!"

Paparazzi roaming the streets of Southern California have been commonplace for more than a decade as the shutterbugs looked to land exclusive shots that can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Industry veterans recalled incidents where paparazzi chasing celebrities have been injured, but they couldn't remember a photographer being killed while working.

"Here in the state of California, I'm surprised this hasn't happened before," said Giles Harrison, a celebrity photographer and owner of London Entertainment Group.

Harrison is familiar with the backlash against paparazzi. He and another photographer were convicted of misdemeanor false imprisonment and sentenced to jail for boxing in Arnold Schwarzenegger and his family as they sat in their Hummer in 1998.

Citing that incident and the death of Princess Diana, the state Legislature passed its first anti-paparazzi measure a year later. It created hefty civil penalties that could be paid to stars whose privacy was invaded.

Six months ago, a paparazzo was charged with reckless driving in a high-speed pursuit of Bieber and with violating a separate, 2010 state law that toughened punishment for those who drive dangerously in pursuit of photos for commercial gain.

However, a judge last month dismissed the paparazzi law charges, saying the law was overly broad.

The judge cited problems with the statute, saying it was aimed at newsgathering activities protected by the First Amendment, and lawmakers should have increased penalties for reckless driving rather than target those who photograph celebrities.

City prosecutors said they would appeal the judge's ruling.

The law was prompted by the experiences of Jennifer Aniston, who provided details to a lawmaker about being unable to drive away after she was surrounded by paparazzi on Pacific Coast Highway.

On Tuesday, a friend of Bieber's was behind the wheel of the Ferrari when a California Highway Patrol officer pulled it over for speeding along Interstate 405, authorities said.

"This photographer evidently had been following the white Ferrari" and when it was pulled over after sundown he stopped, parked and crossed the street to snap photos, Los Angeles police Detective Charles Walton said.

The photographer stood on a low freeway railing to shoot photographs of the traffic stop over a chain-link fence, authorities said.

"The CHP officer told him numerous times that it wasn't safe for him to be there and to return to his vehicle," Walton said.

There were no sidewalks or pedestrian crossings along the street where the photographer had parked, so the driver of the car that struck him had no reason to expect a pedestrian, Walton said of the accident.

"It would have been very difficult for her to see him," the detective said.

It wasn't immediately clear how fast the motorist, a 69-year-old woman, was traveling, but she was not believe to be at fault and was unlikely to be cited, police said.

Harrison said he routinely tells his photographers to be safe when they are working.

"In any job you have to exercise a degree of common sense and caution," he said.

Harrison hopes celebrities and paparazzi examine their actions to ensure a similar event doesn't happen again. No photo is worth someone's life, he said.

"Everybody wants to be the first one to get that shot, get that scoop," Harrison said. "But at the end of the day, you can't spend money if you are dead."

Losing "Protection" in Florida's Environmental Agency | FlaglerLive ...

FlaglerLive | December 31, 2012

florida parks dep

In the balance. (curatrok77)

By Paula Dockery

Some of the state?s strongest protectors of our natural resources were recently expelled from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Fifty-eight of the most knowledgeable and long-serving employees were let go in order to fulfill the governor?s promise/threat of less regulation.

While I believe that the executive branch of government has the responsibility of managing state agencies, it?s vital that within their discretion lies the moral imperative to abide by the mission of the department and the laws that govern them.

While administrations come and go, longtime department employees possess the commitment, institutional knowledge and continuity to adhere to that mission. They also should be free to perform their duties without fear of political reprisals and without overt political favoritism.

When political novice Rick Scott became Florida?s governor, he appointed Herschel Vinyard, a shipyard executive, to be secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection. Many of us who have been involved with environmental and water resource issues were very concerned about what message that sent and worried about the possible lack of commitment to protection.

Trying to keep an open mind and respect the governor?s right to name his secretaries, I reluctantly voted to confirm Mr. Vinyard after meeting with him and asking numerous questions about his philosophy and intentions. Once confirmed, he validated my fears through his actions relating to water management districts, funding and selling state-owned lands.

Stories leaked out about water management district employees being purged because they were perceived to be too tough on politically influential developers and engineers. Then came the story of a Department of Environmental Protection employee let go for doing what the law required, despite higher-ups wanting her to turn her head on a questionable permitting issue.

Now a major cleaning out of veteran employees puts the state?s environment in further and potentially irreversible peril. Poor planning decisions lead to long-term and costly damage.

This has come about on top of the dissolution ? during the governor?s first year in office ? of the Department of Community Affairs and the demise of Florida?s Growth Management laws that protected our resources while limiting costly sprawl.

Florida, more than most states, relies on its natural beauty to keep our economy humming. While 18 million residents populate our state, more than 80 million visitors a year flock to our beaches, rivers, lakes and parks, keeping tourism as a cog in our economic engine. Additionally, ecotourism filled the void when visitors couldn?t afford the more costly tourist venues, keeping many Floridians employed.

Florida?s economy depends heavily on its environment, which brings tourists and new residents here and provides the quality of life that businesses indicate is a leading factor in their relocation decisions. According to Tim Center, executive director of Sustainable Florida, ?we look forward to policies and practices that serve the long-term needs of Florida that will continue to attract millions of visitors, millions of dollars in investments and help businesses and residents prosper.?

It is sheer folly to think that protecting the environment is somehow responsible for killing jobs or hurting business when, in fact, it does the opposite.

Eric Eikenberg, CEO of the Everglades Foundation, believes the restoration of the Everglades is a key driver of Florida?s economic future. He stated, ?Nearly one in three Floridians depend on the Everglades ecosystem for their drinking water. Without that supply of water, Florida?s economic growth will be jeopardized.?

After decades of good environmental stewardship under governors of both parties ? Graham, Chiles, Martinez, Bush, Crist ? many of our successes are being dismantled in a mere two years.

A plea to the governor and the Department of Environmental Protection secretary: Please put the ?protection? back in the Department of Environmental Protection.

This can be achieved by taking the following steps:

? Rehire and keep the most knowledgeable and experienced employees who have dedicated their professional lives to the protection of Florida?s natural resources.

? Reverse shortsighted decisions and impulsive actions that will have long-term and costly consequences.

? Resist the urge to expedite developments of the politically connected at the expense of Floridians? quality of life.

? Adequately fund water resource development to ensure a safe and plentiful water supply and avoid a return to the water wars of the past.

? Restore polluted water bodies and prevent further water quality degradation; it is much more costly to clean up a polluted water body than to keep it clean and healthy.

Paula Dockery was term-limited as a Republican state senator from Lakeland after 16 years in the Florida Legislature. She can be reached by email here.

Hillary Clinton Progressing After Blood Clot In Head, Expected To Fully Recover: Doctor

BY JOSH LEDERMAN & MATTHEW LEE, ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Doctors treating Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for a blood clot say the clot formed in her head but they stress that they are confident she will make a full recovery.

In an update Monday on Clinton's condition, her doctors say the blood clot did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. The clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear.

Clinton's doctors say that to help dissolve the clot, they are treating her with blood thinners. They say she will be released once the medication dose has been established.

In their update, the doctors say the 65-year-old secretary of state is making excellent progress and is in good spirits.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spent a second day at a New York hospital on Monday, under observation for a blood clot, stemming from a concussion she sustained while battling a stomach virus.

The illness has kept her out of the public view since Dec. 7, and has started to raise a host of questions as her team keeps typically tightlipped about the details: Where is the clot located? How severe is her condition? How soon will she recover? And, as Democrats are privately if not publicly speculating, how might her illness affect a decision about running for president in 2016?

Aides disclosed the blood clot Sunday, with her spokesman, Phillipe Reines, issuing a statement that said: "Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion." He had no immediate update Monday on her condition, raising the question of whether she will return to work before she steps down as secretary of state.

After decades in politics, Clinton, 65, says she plans to spend the next year resting. She has long insisted she had no intention of mounting a second campaign for the White House four years from now. But the door is not entirely closed, and she would almost certainly emerge as the Democrat to beat if she decided to give in to calls by Democratic fans and run again.

Her age ? and thereby health ? would likely be a factor under consideration, given that Clinton would be 69 when sworn in, if she were elected in 2016. That might become even more of an issue in the early jockeying for 2016 if what started as a bad stomach bug becomes a prolonged, public bout with more serious infirmity.

Not that Democrats are willing to talk openly about the political implications of a long illness, choosing to keep any discussions about her condition behind closed doors. Publicly, Democrats reject the notion that a blood clot could hinder her political prospects.

"Some of those concerns could be borderline sexist," said Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist who worked for Clinton when she was a senator. "Dick Cheney had significant heart problems when he was vice president, and people joked about it. He took the time he needed to get better, and it wasn't a problem."

It isn't uncommon for presidential candidates' health ? and age ? to be an issue. Both in 2000 and 2008, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had to rebut concerns he was too old to be commander in chief or that his skin cancer could resurface.

Two decades after Clinton became the first lady, signs of her popularity ? and her political strength ? are ubiquitous.

Obama had barely declared victory in November when Democrats started zealously plugging Clinton as their strongest White House contender four years from now, should she choose to take that leap.

"Wouldn't that be exciting," House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi declared in December. "I hope she goes ? why wouldn't she?"

Even Republicans concede that were she to run, Clinton would be a force to be reckoned with.

"Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl," former House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said in December. "The Republican Party today is incapable of competing at that level."

Americans admire Clinton more than any other woman in the world, according to a Gallup poll released Monday ? the 17th time in 20 years that Clinton has claimed that title. And a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of Americans would support Clinton as a candidate for president in 2016, with just 37 percent opposed. Meanwhile, websites have already cropped up hawking "Clinton 2016" mugs and tote bags.

Clinton returned to the U.S. from a trip to Europe, then fell ill with a stomach virus in early December that left her severely dehydrated and forced her to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East. Until then, she had cancelled only two scheduled overseas trips, one to Europe after breaking her elbow in June 2009 and one to Asia after the February 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Her condition worsened when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from the virus. It was announced on Dec. 13.

Reines, her spokesman, said her doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam on the concussion. He said she was being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital until at least Tuesday so doctors can monitor the medication.

This isn't the first time Clinton has suffered a blood clot. In 1998, midway through her husband's second term as president, Clinton was in New York fundraising for the midterm elections when a swollen right foot led her doctor to diagnose a clot in her knee requiring immediate treatment.

Medical experts said the seriousness of a blood clot diagnosis varies widely based on where it is located.

Clots in the legs are a common risk after someone has been bedridden, as Clinton may have been for a time after her concussion in December. Those are "no big deal" and are treated with blood thinners, said Dr. Gholam Motamedi, a neurologist at Georgetown University Medical Center who is not involved in Clinton's care.

But a clot in a lung or the brain is more serious. Lung clots, called pulmonary embolisms, can be deadly, and a clot in the brain can cause a stroke, Motamedi said.

Last Thursday, before the blood clot was discovered, Reines said that Clinton expected to return to work this week after the New Year holiday.

Beyond talk of future politics, Clinton's three-week absence from the State Department has raised eyebrows among some conservative commentators who questioned the seriousness of Clinton's ailment after she cancelled planned Dec. 20 testimony before Congress on the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton had been due to discuss with lawmakers a scathing report on the attack she had commissioned that found serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed. Four officials cited in the report have either resigned or been reassigned.

SQUATLO RANT: I'VE BEEN PONDERING SOME SELF-IMPROVEMENT, BUT LET'S NOT CALL 'EM "RESOLUTIONS"...

Pages

I'VE BEEN PONDERING SOME SELF-IMPROVEMENT, BUT LET'S NOT CALL 'EM "RESOLUTIONS"...

??????????

Okay, so maybe I'm not exactly "perfect" in my current configuration.? But this "resolution" thing is taking it too far, in my opinion.

?????????? Every year we muddle along, putting on weight, ignoring our dental issues, letting household improvements slide, telling ourselves that THIS will be the fresh start we need to finally drop the pounds, clean out the garage, fix the roof, repaint the bedrooms, caulk the tubs, etc. etc. etc. and in the end, we punish ourselves for a week or two in early January, then revert to whatever got us into such sorry shape to begin with.

?????????? My resolution this year is to make no bullshit resolutions.? My lovely (and dangerous) wife, on the other hand, has already started carrying through on her threats to impose a new diet plan for the two of us.? I call her "cleansing" proposals a diet of brush and potpourri... and I've been subjected to this shit in the past.? It's not nearly as horrible as I pretend it is, but if I don't act sufficiently miserable she'll just keep ratcheting up the levels of bland roughage until we're actually surviving on twigs and sunflower hulls.

??????????? Sigh...

??????????? I prefer to make resolutions I can keep.? For instance, I'm perfectly willing to give up Brussel sprouts, boiled okra, gin, and going to church.? I already hate all of those things.? See how easy this is?

??????????? I can give up peanut brittle, coconut, wild women, and day trading, too.? Being a married man who never eats peanut brittle or coconut, who already HAS a wild woman, and who doesn't know a damn thing about the stock market helps with this series of sacrifices I'm willing to make.

?????????? But for Christ's sake, baby, don't tell me we can't have cheese, or hamburgers, or baked potatoes with butter, or cold beer!? Don't hide the sausage-cheese balls, or put the fudge in the freezer labeled as "asparagus".? Surely we can compromise!

?????????? Compromise... what a concept.? I read in the morning paper where Congressional leaders and our President are trying to pound out some kind of agreement to avoid a brush and potpourri diet of sequestration cuts and taxes... and I'm willing to bet those assholes have a better chance at reaching a happy medium than we do here at Chateau Squatlo.

?????????? If you come over to visit, please bring beer and something totally decadent to eat.

?????????? I'd do it for you...
