YAPHANK, N.Y. ? A New York police official now says one person may be responsible for leaving 10 bodies along a remote barrier beach since 1996.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer says in interviews this week that police no longer think multiple killers are responsible. Dormer has previously said that as many as three people could have left bodies along a desolate Long Island roadway.
In interviews with WABC-TV and Newsday, Dormer did not elaborate on the reason for investigators' revised theory. But he does say it is notable that all victims may be linked to the sex trade.
The investigation began as a hunt for a still-missing New Jersey prostitute. She disappeared in the area in May 2010.
