5 Qualities of a Strong Leader - The Self Improvement Blog

Leadership has a bit of an ambiguous meaning associated with it, and is often used out of context. People frequently make the mistake of calling a boss or an owner a leader, even though they are people who manage through fear tactics and hostile attitudes. The result of this type of leadership is that they lead teams that have very little respect for them and are willing to turn on their leaders in an instant. True leaders, however, are those people who command the respect of those around them, and lead under strong and fair tactics. If you have been trying to fulfill the role of being a strong leader, there are several defining character traits that need to be cultivated; here are five of them:

1.?????? Strong communication skills ?Anyone who is in a leadership position has to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with his team and those who work under him. People need to be able to trust that their leader will be forthcoming and candid, two qualities that instill a level of trust and commitment into team members.
2.?????? The ability to change course when necessary ? Sometimes even the best laid plans are going to veer off course. The defining factor between a good leader and a poor one is that a strong leader understands that sometimes changing courses is necessary for the greater good, and she is able to roll with the changes so that her team still comes out ahead.
3.?????? Being able to embrace failure ? The reason that so many people fail is that they let one round with failure tear them down. A true leader is able to embrace failure and learn from it so that he comes back stronger and more prepared the next time around, taking him one step closer to success. He is able to see failure as one very small part of a much bigger picture.
4.?????? Unwavering dedication ? While any leader needs a team that is committed to her, that team also needs a leader that has unparalleled dedication to them as well. Without that dedication teams can turn against their leaders and themselves in an instant, resulting in chaos and disorder. Unwavering dedication from a leader makes the team trust their leader and want to work harder for her in return.
5.?????? Being assertive, not aggressive ? Assertive behaviors are those that are characterized as being self-confident and self-assured; they are firm and forceful without being overbearing and intimidating. Having self-confidence is something that instills a level of trust in others, encouraging them to want to follow along. Being aggressive, however, only turns people away, as most people don?t operate well trying to follow someone who is hostile and volatile.

Strong leaders are assertive, communicative, and honest, dedicated, and have the ability to evolve over time. These are both intrinsic qualities and qualities that are developed over time. Being a good leader means that your team is able to trust that you will make the best decisions for them; without this trust, failure is imminent. Spending time fine-tuning these qualities in yourself will help you forge ahead on the path to leadership and success.
