SINGAPORE, Sep 29, 2012 ? SINGAPORE veterans have added two more bronzes to their growing medal collection on the third day of the 2012 Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships (CVFC).
With a total of four bronzes so far in the championships, this is the best result Singapore has ever seen. Previously, there were no medal winners for Singapore in the biannual event, which is currently in its 10th?year.
?
Teng Nan See, 41, secured a bronze medal for Singapore in the women?s epee event when she was defeated by Abigail Nutt of Australia, 10-7 in the semi-finals.
Nan See, an ex-national number one fencer for Singapore, was pleased with the result.
?This was a very competitive competition with former champions and ex-Olympians with a lot of experience so I?m very glad to go so far in the competition to win another medal for Singapore,? she said.
?
Singapore added its fourth medal for the team in the men?s sabre team event when the group, comprising of Dr Lau Chee Cheong, Dr Francis Kwong and Ng Aik Phong beat Australia 45-43 in an exciting third and fourth placing match.
57-year-old Dr Lau, who won a bronze medal in the individual?s sabre event yesterday, staged a stunning comeback for Singapore when the team was trailing Australia 35-40 whilst going into the final bout. Team Australia could not match Singapore?s anchor fencer?s speed of thought and quick footwork to concede the advantage.
?I would like to thank the strong support from team mates and friends which especially helped me in that final bout. It is always nice to win a medal but to do it from a losing position made it even more satisfying,? he commented.
Singapore?s team manager, Felix Tan, enthused: ?All the hard work put in the last few months of training and travelling for overseas competitions has certainly paid off for our fencers, with two medals won against very strong and experienced fencers. I am very pleased with the performances and effort shown by the entire team.?
?
Tomorrow will be the final day of the championships, with two more gold medals on offer for the team events of Women?s Epee and Men?s Foil.
There will also be the Community Challenge event, where three corporate or community groups of four fencers will compete against each other. This is part of the CVFC organising committee?s community outreach project, which aims to encourage more adults to stay active and at the same time, learn the skill and art of fencing.
The Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships is competed by fencers who are over 40 years of age. The four-day championships, held in the Pasir Ris Sports and Recreation Cetnre, started on Thursday and ends tomorrow, 30th September (Sunday) at 2pm.
Admission for the championships is free. For more information about the event and how to go to Pasir Ris Sports and Recreation Centre, please visit http://cvfc2012.sg.

A nation inured to wanton murder was nevertheless shocked by this one: In November 2010, a group of four young men milling about as a party ended attacked another teen, randomly picking him as the victim of their vicious assault. Bobby Tillman, 18, did nothing to provoke his assailants to knock him to the ground and kick and stomp him to death. The crime occurred outside a suburban Atlanta home after parents called a halt to a teen party that had gotten out of control. This was no beating by members of a rival gang, no attack set off by longstanding grudges or old misunderstandings. ...

It's getting harder and harder to find a good phone?these days that isn't a smartphone?and that goes double if you're looking for something with a keyboard. The $19.99 Samsung Array doesn't do much to remedy the situation, but at this point, any option is a welcome one. To that end, the Array is a simple feature phone with a decent slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It doesn't have 3G, and its feature set is rather limited. But if all you want is to talk and text, it should suffice.
Sprint's Version and Conclusions
This is the same phone as the Samsung Array?we reviewed over on Boost Mobile.?For a closer look at the phone, read our review and check out the slideshow below. It's the same device, and since Boost runs on Sprint's network, we expect it to perform similarly.
There are so few keyboarded feature phones available that I don't want to ding the Samsung Array too much. If you need to talk and text and not much else it should do the trick. The LG Rumor Reflex??is another decent option. It has an eco-friendly design with a larger display and a nicer keyboard, though it isn't as simple to use as the Array. The Kyocera Brio??has a BlackBerry-style slab keyboard and better call quality, but next to nothing in the way of features. The Kyocera Milano, meanwhile, features a whimsical design and decent call quality, but also comes up short for media.?

We usually associate smartphones in news reporting with citizen journalism, not full-time journalists. However, a confluence of events has just led to the BBC's Nick Garnett becoming a pioneer for mobile broadcasting on the professional level. When a shortage of satellite trucks prevented Garnett from getting the usual video feed for the BBC News Channel, he successfully arranged the British network's first live video interview piped through a smartphone. The key, Garnett says, was Dejero's Live+ iPhone app: while live streaming apps are already commonplace, Dejero's let him merge the 3G and WiFi connections together, getting enough bandwidth to make a TV-worthy broadcast in a country where LTE is still very new. Combined with some very ad hoc staging and help from the BBC's technical teams, the coordination resulted in a surprisingly smooth interview about flooding in northeastern England with relatively few hints of the extra-tiny recording equipment involved. It's unlikely that broadcast crews will reach to their pockets for live coverage solutions before anything else, but the BBC is actively testing Dejero and other apps that could make smartphones as much a part of the field reporting arsenal as a camcorder and an eye for a good story. As we can't embed the clip, check the source link to see it for yourself.

So let me step back a bit. About a year ago I did a workshop with the CMS Experts Europe Group of Janus Boye about Disruptive Innovation. It has become a bit of a hobby of mine to look for disruptive technologies. So naturally I was interested in the disruptive nature of the taxi app.
First, taxis usually work in two modes ? you either hitch one driving by, or you order one to pick you up. In New York or London demand for taxis is high, so if you are a cab driver, it suffices to drive around a block and you will have a new guest. There is little incentive for them to go through a call center to be dispatched to a client.?In London for instance, most cab drivers will not be connected to a call center (one friendly cabby estimated that ?20% of London cabbies are enrolled in such a scheme there).
A call center however is useful in smaller places. Cities like Basel. A cab driver pays a monthly fee for the call center, and the call center dispatches taxies to clients. In Germany a cab driver pays e.g. 450 ? (580 USD) per month to the call center in order to get a supply of clients. In Basel, the fee is nearly twice s much at 1000 CHF (1070 USD). The taxi drivers have little alternatives to the call center services to get business here.
Now enter the app. The app connects the client (me) with the cab driver circumventing intermediaries like the call center. I haven't researched their fee structures in detail, but from what I hear, for instance in Germany the cab driver pays about 1$ in fees per ride initiated through the app to the app provider. While this might not seem like a big money saver, its main value for the taxi drivers is that the fee is per ride.
In Germany, if you take a three week holiday, you still pay the monthly 580USD for the call center. If you only work part time, same thing. The call center, in other words, doesn't care if you work or not. The app however does.
And the taxi drivers seem to love the new way of doing business. First, if they just stop on the road and pick up a passenger, they will not have to pay anybody anything. Same for all sick times, vacations or other times they don't work. However, if they need to rely on a third party to get a guest, they just wait until the next request on their mobile comes in and pay 1$ for it. This is a great value proposition for them, and naturally in Germany, cab drivers are using the app pretty much everywhere. The call centers don't like it, but what can they do?
Well, in Switzerland, they simply forbid the use of the app independent of the call center. In other words, the app I use goes to the call center, they notify the taxi driver and dispatch her to me.
Is this the right approach? Will it save the taxi call centers long term? What should they do? Is there anything they actually can do?
The mobile and the taxi app are disruptive to the business of the call center. The "disruptive" part ?means that it change the nature of how things get done. Unless you change as well, you will not survive. I understand that the Swiss taxi center tries to use their dominance to stem the tide, but I believe resistance is futile. Their dispatch service simply is no longer needed.
Let me end with a little story on Kodak and Fujifilm. Both companies at their heyday were quite comparable, one quintessential American, one Japanese film maker. Kodak actually invented the digital camera! Today, Kodak is dead (what a shame), Fujifilm is striving. Why?
They both new at about the same time that change was inevitable. The digital camera would be disruptive for their film business. Surprisingly, Kodak failed to act decisively and forcefully, whereas Fujifilm did. Let's skip an analysis of what Kodak did wrong (lot's of things for sure) in their demise. What did Fujifilm do? They basically said: film as we know it is dead. How can we apply our considerable knowledge, processes, relationships and intellectual property elsewhere? And they did come up with two interesting business ideas that they followed through with ? one in cosmetics (turns out the human skin and film have similar needs and characteristics) and one in flat panel displays, where Fujifilm has developed a film that increases the viewing angle of the display which is market leading.
My advice to call centers: assume dispatching taxis to clients is a dead business proposition. What can you provide that will still be useful? Then act fast and decisively.
These days when I need a cab I simply download an app and press a button. Life has become much easier for this weary traveller. Where did you recently see the disruptive nature of mobile at work?

Underestimating the best quality Hosting Solutions for the Low priced Website hosting Services.
Having an astronomical quantity of website hosting services available, its at all times a more durable activity to select the highest quality enterprise. You can not only shut your eyes and get purely people. Anybody wishes and justifies the perfect service provider with all the very best internet hosting companies. The internet hosting business which you opt for decides the longer term of your respective web-site into a fantastic extent.
There?s been a surge in progress with the internet hosting business recently, getting in additional competitors the time. In addition to the resultant element would be the a multitude of low priced website hosting suppliers which have arrive at the fore, their main software to combat the larger internet hosting properties getting the reduced worth.
In terms of picking out your website hosting supplier, the point that is certainly thought of at first, by tons a large number of of us certainly is the selling price, the affordability. Nearly everybody wishes the most beneficial business for the lowest quite possible selling price. And as a result the cheap hosting vendors are accomplishing a rocking firm. But there exists a relentless competitors in between the significant price tag internet hosting corporations and also affordable manufacturers regarding confirm that is certainly an excellent supplier.
The internet hosting providers charging even more declare the inexpensive webhosting companies could barely search immediately following each of the troubles of internet hosting as well as are struggling to give adequate assist occasionally. A typical opinion regarding the affordable vendors is the fact they rely on sheer quantity for his or her gains and thus they really are not able to help the desire of large bandwidth, slowing down the best from the webpages. Almost all of us also imagine the low price companies give you bad program compared to the larger and higher expense companies. This is simply not authentic in all of the circumstances as a few of them offer you much better companies as opposed to substantial price kinds and then the most suitable internet hosting expert services.
But given that the previous adage goes ?You get that which you pay out for?, this will likely in some cases demonstrate legitimate in internet hosting also. As you pay out increased it can be most liable which you can get one of the best internet hosting products. The businesses that cost a bit more are obligated to answer all of your queries, anytime. Although the inexpensive manufacturers aren?t impelled. Their price tag rebates may very well be the solution to your queries.
And as significantly the superior fee hosting merchants are involved, its their manufacturer that counts. Nearly all of us select substantial fee due to brand name title, manufacturer equity may well be. But with this type of a higher amount of buyers, it?s at times inconceivable to render the most effective website hosting companies to all of these, they usually may well not give you the chance to deliver accurate assist also.
An alternative perspective could possibly be that likely for that low priced webhosting online businesses is mostly a compromise amongst fee and superior quality services. They purely select the fundamentals ? bandwidth, disk place and technical aid. These pre-conceived notions restricts the consumers from delving deep into really decreased priced and perhaps the free of cost companies featured by them.
However the most important place of every one of the debate is usually that almost nothing is predictable and as a result it truly is extremely important to perform an appropriate investigation to find the top products.

Embracing AirPlay has usually involved a wholesale switch in hardware: years of speaker investment go out the window for the sake of skipping a wire. Onkyo doesn't have a problem if you bring your own equipment to the fray. Its new DS-A5 docking station brings Apple's WiFi media streaming to many home stereos, including those of rivals, as long as there's a wired or 802.11g-capable wireless router to feed the connection. Naturally, there's perks if you do live in an Onkyo universe -- any link using its Remote Interactive cable can both wake the stereo through AirPlay as well as control the dock from a traditional remote. About the only oddities are the vintage composite video output and a 30-pin dock for charging iPads, iPhones and iPods, neither of which will be much help if you live on the cutting edge. Onkyo brings the DS-A5 to American shores in October for $199; that's a lot to pay for playing songs from the couch, but it's a sight more affordable than replacing home audio equipment costing multiple times that amount.

Intellectual Ventures, the Seattle-area giant known for buying up patents and licensing them out, has settled a handful of patent lawsuits over DRAM and NAND Flash memory with two defendants: Korea-based SK Hynix Inc . and Japan-based Elpida Memory Inc.
Terms of the deal weren?t disclosed.
But the news still warrants some attention because it involves IV, which throughout most of its 12-year history, has managed to make piles of money outside the courtroom by aggressively licensing patents in its portfolio to perceived infringers.
All that changed in late 2010, when IV decided to make use of the courts. One of its first cases, brought in December of that year in federal court in Delaware, was against SK Hynix and Elpida over five patents related to memory chips. IV later brought claims over five other patents against two companies in the?International Trade Commission and in the Western District of Washington.
On Monday, IV announced that it had settled all three matters with both companies. ?It?s an incredible validation of the strength of our semiconductor-patent portfolio,? said Melissa Finocchio, IV?s chief litigation counsel, in a call with the Law Blog. ?I think all of the sides were quite happy with the settlement.?
An email to an SK Hynix spokesman was not immediately returned. We also left a message with a spokesman at Micron Technology , which is in the process of acquiring Elpida (and where, incidentally, Ms. Finocchio used to work before coming to IV).
According to Ms. Finocchio, IV has six other cases pending.
LB nomenclature note:?This much is certain: IV is big, powerful and secretive. What?s less certain: the right shorthand descriptor for the company. IV calls itself an ?invention investment firm.? Other names that get bandied about for firms that buy up patents and license or sue over them include ?non-practicing entity,? (NPE) ?patent aggregation firm,? ?patent assertion entity,? and, of course, ?patent troll.?
We?re sure at some point one appellation will emerge as the winner, but for now, it?s still open to debate. Lots of debate. To some, practically every patent plaintiff is a ?troll.? To others, trolls are a mere subset of ?non-practicing entities.? To some, NPEs and aggregators are the same thing. To others, differences exist. It?s enough to make our head hurt.

This summer, Cornell alumnus Lisa Stasse released her debut novel The Forsaken. Based in a post-apocalyptic America, her novel is the story of Alenna Shawcross, a 17-year-old orphan who is (spoiler alert!) about to be punished for a crime she hasn?t committed ? yet. As punishment Alenna is sent to Prison Island Alpha, known by the people on it as ?The Wheel.? Faced with living on the criminal inhabited island, Alenna is forced to learn to adapt and survive. A new addition to the young adult fiction-science fiction family, The Forsaken follows in the footsteps of trendy of science fiction novels like The Hunger Games while still working to draw inspiration from genre classics like Lord of the Flies and Brave New World.
Lisa was a Government and English Literature double major at Cornell. She is currently a digital librarian at UCLA by day and a young adult author by night. This summer we got the chance to sit down with Lisa and talk about her new book.
Sun: How did you come up with the idea for The Forsaken?
Lisa: I had this terrible nightmare, and my heart stopped. I woke up and I breathed a sigh of relief and thought to myself that was really cool. I was on an island and it was some kind of prison colony. I didn?t really know why I was there or what was going on. I saw debris. I thought: that?s so cool; I wonder what I could do with that idea.?
Sun: What was your inspiration for your main character, Alenna?
Lisa: One of my favorite root stories is Heart of Darkness, I really liked the show Lost, I like the idea of putting characters in the modern world into a wilderness setting. Some of the more modern stuff too like The?Hunger Games and The Maze Runner and Divergent, all of them deal with aspects of that. Young people in hostile environments.
Sun: Do you think The Forsaken will reach the popularity of books like The Hunger Games?
Lisa: I?m hoping to be in the ranks of The?Hunger Games, but at the same time I would like to think of The Forsaken as being a little grittier. I think of it as more of an alternate reality. Not projected on a fixed time. The book is down and gritty, I thought about what I would do if I were put in that situation and I know if I wanted to survive I want to get down in the dirt myself.? In some ways it is like The Hunger Games, but at the same time I think The Forsaken has its own qualities.
Sun: Why did you choose to write about teenage characters?
Lisa: I was always interested in teens, in that sense of self-definition that happens at that age. I really wanted to work with a character that I thought something like this could affect her entire life. Alenna saw lack of opportunity and bleak conditions around her and this only gets exacerbated at prison island Alpha.
Sun: It seems like an area people are getting really excited about.
Lisa: Yeah, I really like young adult fiction. For the past 10 years, young adult fiction has been one of the most vibrant areas of literature. People are really passionate about it. A lot of energy and new types of stories are coming out of that genre right now that aren?t coming out of adult fiction. There?s sort of an energy and nexus in the young adult world right now.
Sun: In your book, is there a character that you relate to most?
Lisa: It?s hard to write any character without seeing part of yourself in that character. What I like most about Alenna is that she really rises to the challenge. She didn?t realize she had so much strength until she was put in that situation.
Sun: The title of the second book of the trilogy is The Uprising, without giving too much away, what can we expect from the next installment in the trilogy??
Lisa: There will be a few new characters, and some old characters will rejoin the cast and work together to define their future and create a new life for themselves. I can say that each book in the trilogy will be on larger scale than the one before. Sometimes when I?m writing the characters surprise me.
Sun: If you could have your readers take one thing away from the book, what would it be?
Lisa: The main thing I would say is you can do more than you think you can do. You always have more options than you realize, so take action and take risks.

IMAX footage of the East Otter Tail County and Wadena tornadoes will have its Minnesota premiere when ?Tornado Alley? opens at the Science Museum of Minnesota?s Omnitheater in St. Paul on Friday.
?Tornado Alley? opened in other IMAX theatres, mostly science museums, in March 2011. It was directed by Sean Casey from Discovery Channel?s ?Storm Chasers?, and Wadena and Otter Tail County tornado footage from June 17, 2010, was shown on an episode premiering in December 2010. Footage from the same day was used to make the IMAX film.
The film includes footage from a variety of storms, and there are no location subtitles to distinguish individual tornadoes, said Brandon Ivey, meteorologist on IMAX film director Sean Casey?s team that moved through the Wadena area on the Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV) on June 17, 2010.
However, Ivey said, people wanting to spot the local EF4 tornadoes can watch for several specific shots in the film.
The first shot, also shown in ?Storm Chasers?, is of the multiple vortex phase of the East Otter Tail tornado, and the only multiple vortex tornado footage in the IMAX film.
Another shot, unique to the IMAX movie, has the team fleeing from the East Otter Tail tornado in its large wedge phase.
?That large tornado comes up right behind the TIV and is ripping a lot of trees out of the ground,? Ivey said.
The Wadena tornado also has footage in the IMAX film, going through town.
?That shot is pretty much the same shot highlighted in ?Storm Chasers?,? Ivey said. ?In the foreground, the shingles are being lifted up due to the inflow winds of that tornado.?
Ivey also said there were aerial shots of the tornado damage as well as some footage shot on a regular high-definition camcorder, which shows up as a small letterbox format on an IMAX screen.
Footage from Wadena appears nine times in the film, including the introduction and mostly 26-30 minutes into the 45-minute film.
Ivey said his team chased the earlier and longer-tracked East Otter Tail tornado for about an hour, but when the Wadena tornado hit the west side of town, they dropped the chase and decided to help. The team?s driver, Marcus Gutierrez, was a medic in the Navy and effective in search and rescue efforts.
Chris Bauer, co-director of public relations at the Science Museum of Minnesota, said the storm chasers? ultimate goal in capturing tornado footage is to understand how the storms form and increase warning times and public safety.
Additionally, the Science Museum offers a school field trip package, ?The Big Weather Experience?, which includes the film, the live theater program, ?Storms on Stage?, and museum weather exhibits. ?The Big Weather Experience? runs from Oct. 2 to Dec. 21.
While ?Tornado Alley? has shown in 3D in some other theaters, the Science Museum of Minnesota?s Omnitheater does not use 3D technology.
It is an impressive experience anyway, Bauer said.
?It?s a nine-story domed screen that encompasses you, and you really feel like you?re there, and really riding along with the TIV vehicle,? Bauer said.
At the Sept. 11 regular Wadena City Council meeting, Mayor Wayne Wolden said he was interviewed by the Star Tribune for his thoughts on the upcoming movie, but there wasn?t much going on locally.
?Apparently the team from Storm Chasers is going around and promoting it in Rochester and everywhere but Wadena,? Wolden said.
?Tornado Alley? is scheduled to show through June 2013. Ticket prices for the Omnitheater are $9 for adults and $8 for children.

We love Hawaiian culture. We love the brightly colored flower leis, the easygoing atmosphere, the chilled-out music, and the fluid, rhythmic moves of the hula. And most all we love how everything seems to come accompanied by a great big aloha smile.
You can find the famous Hawaiian spirit in abundance at Honolulu?s annual Aloha Festivals. Every year for well over 60 years, throughout the month of September locals have celebrated the history and traditions of Hawaii with kama??ina (local residents) and malihini (visitors).
The Floral Parade is one of the most beautiful of the festival?s events. During the cool of morning, dozens of horse-mounted Hawaiians wearing garish traditional ensembles (flowing dresses and capes for the ladies, cowboy-style outfits for the gents) with matching floral leis and headdresses (men wear cowboy hats) elegantly parade from Ala Moana Park, along Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park. With them, comes a retina burning and eardrum busting cascade of floats and marching bands. Catching it is easy ? it?s free to stand anywhere along the route.
This year?s Floral Parade takes place on Sept. 22 at 9am (HST). If you want to see what it?s all about but can?t make it there in person, head over to the official live stream courtesy of Channel 808.

TUNIS (Reuters) - A Tunisian military court handed down a suspended prison sentence to President Moncef Marzouki's former aide who criticized the army's role, in a case that may raise concerns about freedoms in the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts.
Ayoub Massoudi publicly accused the head of the army Rachid Ammar in August of throwing his weight behind the Islamist-led government's decision to extradite Muammar Gaddafi's prime minister Baghadi al-Mahmoudi to Libya in June.
A military court in Tunis gave Massoudi a four-month suspended jail sentence for "insulting the army and hurting the military establishment's image". However, it lifted a travel ban imposed when he was charged in August.
The extradition of Libya's Mahmoudi sparked a political row in Tunisia.
President Marzouki, a veteran human rights and secular activist, said he had not been consulted and withheld his permission for months over concerns the Libyan official might not receive a fair trial.
His aide, Massoudi, resigned two days after the extradition. He told Reuters the case against him was political but said the verdict would not muzzle him.
"It (verdict) seeks to confirm the military institution as scared and exempt from criticism," he said.
The case comes at a sensitive time for Tunisian politics, which are already marred by disputes over a new constitution and protests by Tunisians eager to see authorities fulfill the promise of their revolution.
Secular opposition parties have accused the government, led by the Islamic Ennahda Movement, of muzzling free speech, a charge it dismisses.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Lithium is a 'gold standard' drug for treating bipolar disorder, however not everyone responds in the same way. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Biology of Mood & Anxiety Disorders finds that this is true at the levels of gene activation, especially in the activation or repression of genes which alter the level the apoptosis (programmed cell death). Most notably BCL2, known to be important for the therapeutic effects of lithium, did not increase in non-responders. This can be tested in the blood of patients within four weeks of treatment.
A research team from Yale University School of Medicine measured the changing levels of gene activity in the blood of twenty depressed adult subjects with bipolar disorder before treatment, and then fortnightly once treatment with lithium carbonate had begun.
Over the eight weeks of treatment there were definite differences in the levels of gene expression between those who responded to lithium (measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale) and those who failed to respond. Dr Robert Beech who led this study explained, "We found 127 genes that had different patterns of activity (turned up or down) and the most affected cellular signalling pathway was that controlled programmed cell death (apoptosis)."
For people who responded to lithium the genes which protect against apoptosis, including Bcl2 and IRS2, were up regulated, while those which promote apoptosis were down regulated, including BAD and BAK1.
The protein coded by BAK1 can open an anion channel in mitochondrial walls which leads to leakage of mitochondrial contents and activation of cell death pathways. Damage similar to this has been seen within the prefrontal cortex of the brain of patients with bipolar disorder. BAD protein is thought to promote BAK1 activity, while Bcl2 binds to BAK1 and prevents its ability to bind to the channel.
Dr Beech continued, "This positive swing in regulation of apoptosis for lithium responders was measurable as early as four weeks after the start of treatment, while in non-responders there was a measureable shift in the opposite direction. It seems then, that increased expression of BCL2 and related genes is necessary for the therapeutic effects of lithium. Understanding these differences in genes expression may lead towards personalized treatment for bipolar disorder in the future."

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Shengyuan Yang, Florida Institute of Technology assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, with graduate student Sang Joo Lee, has published a paper on the first-ever imaging of cells growing on spherical surfaces. The paper is published in the online journal Review of Scientific Instruments, and will appear later in September in the print version.
The potential biomedical applications of the researchers' technique include new strategies and devices for the early detection and isolation of cancer cells, facilitating new methods of treating cancer tissues. "We also foresee new strategies and techniques to control the differentiation of stem cells and the morphologies and structures of the resulting cells and tissues," said Yang.
The effects of substrate stiffness on cell behaviors have been extensively studied; however, the effects of substrate curvature are not well-documented. The curvature of the surface on which cells adhere can have profound effects on cell behaviors, according to Yang.
"To reveal these cell mechano-biological responses to substrate curvatures, we have introduced a novel, simple, and flexible class of substrates, polyacrylamide gels embedded with micro glass balls ranging in diameter from 5 mm to 2 mm, to culture cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental attempt to study cell responses to spherically-shaped substrates. Our cell culture experiments imply that this class of substrates, micro glass ball embedded gels, can be useful tools to study cell mechanobiological responses to substrate curvatures, related cell and tissue engineering researches, and biomedical applications, such as cancer detection and treatment, and the control of stem cell differentiations, for example," said Yang.
This work was supported with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Program. The reviewer of this paper at Review of Scientific Instruments commented, according to Yang: "This is a clever idea. . . This work has great potentials with high impact."
