Parish leader speaks out about robbery and kidnapping that happened to church member

Irondequoit Police are asking for your help to identify a man they say kidnapped a church secretary and robbed her.

The woman was not harmed physically, but police say they want to get this man off the streets.

The Parish leader is in shock Thursday night, trying to understand how anyone could commit a crime anywhere near a church and innocent worker... who he says seeks to help anyone in need.

The Parish leader has a message for this man, saying, "Please step forward and please give whatever information you have to the Irondequoit police department. It is the Christian thing to do."

He continues, "The church is our spiritual home on earth...and for somebody to come to the church with any intentions other than that, it's very, very disappointing."

News10NBC agreed not to show his church and he asked to have his identity shielded, to protect his secretary who police say was kidnapped and robbed on Thursday.

Sergeant Dean, of the Irondequoit Police Department says, "He pulled out a weapon, forced her to give him some of her belongings, made her get into her own car, drive him into Greece. They went to a local bank...she was forced to give up her ATM pin number and card. He withdrew money from her account."

The man finally made her drive to Lyell Avenue, where he jumped out and ran away. The woman was not harmed.

This is all very upsetting to the Parish leader.

"She's a very kind person," he says, "If you would ring the door bell she would answer the door, or if you would see her in church on Sundays or any church functions she would always have a smile on her face. Not an inch of guile or bitterness in her at all... just a very, very, kindly person. It is very, very sad that something like this could happen to her."

Sergeant Dean continues, "We're just asking the public to look at the photograph and if they know the person to call 911 and speak to someone from the Irondequoit Police."

Police say the woman did all the right things to make it out of this situation alive.

Sergeant Dean advises women to always be aware of your surroundings... However, he says he believes this is a random and isolated incident.

He says there have been no reports of similar crimes in the area.
