Topic: Queen Mary 2 heading to Abu Dhabi - Cruises

The Cunard liner is set to visit Abu Dhabi

Cunard is preparing to send its luxury flagship vessel, the Queen Mary 2, to Abu Dhabi, in what will be a maiden call to the region as part of a cruise around India.

Built in 2004, the $880 million dollar liner is also scheduled to arrive at the Mina Zayed cruise terminal later this month before setting off for Cochin in India.

These stop-offs are part of a special 106-day world voyage that has departed from Southampton and is set to travel around the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Indian Ocean with port calls in the Far East and Australia along the way.

Set to visit Abu Dhabi on January 29th, the illustrious vessel will bring 2,620 passengers to the Middle East region in a port call that is sure to bring a healthy injection of cash to the area.

It certainly plays into the plans of local tourism officials, who are keen to attract 180,000 cruise passengers to the region over the course of the current travel season.

Commenting on ship's imminent arrival, leisure product development manager Noura Al Dhaheri of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority said: "To attract a cruise liner of this calibre is a tremendous endorsement of Abu Dhabi?s rising status as a global cruise destination and solid sector partner."

The news contrasts with other cruise-related developments in the region, with Norwegian Cruise Line recently cancelling a number of planned stops in Egypt for the next 12 months.

Would you consider cruising to that part of the world?
